Johnny Herbert in 2000

Malaysia

Qualifying

Malaysia marked time to say a fond farewell to our Johnny as he moves to Champ Car next year. Qualifying was disappointing after practice sessions indicated a good position was on the cards. Johnny was 12th but was hoping to be in the top 10.

Race

Johnny's race was going well and at one point he was up to 4th place, but dropped down after a poor pit stop. However, Johnny's famous bad luck struck again when the rear suspension failed at high speed and he was catapulted into the Armco. Johnny was able to get out of the car and was nursing a bruised leg, but thankfully was nothing serious.

Well we wish you some better luck over in the US and you'll be sadly missed from the F1 grid next year.

Retired.

Japan

Qualifying

The Jaguar was performing better in Japan but is still some way off the pace it should be. Johnny qualified in the top 10 and was optimistic for the race.

Race

Johnny made a good start in the race and was up to 8th after the first lap. He was unable to hold it there though and Jacques Villeneuve got past him. However, Johnny raced well to the end and finished just outside the points in 7th. Malaysia will be Johnny's last F1 race, so let's hope things continue to improve at Jaguar so Johnny can leave F1 on a high.

Finished 7th

USA

Qualifying

Qualifying was once again rather poor for Jaguar. Johnny was at the back of the field in 19th place and wasn't looking like putting in a good performance.

Race

The race started wet and Johnny Herbert was the only man brave enough to start on slick tyres. It was slow to begin with dropping him to last on the first lap. Things improved from then on and Johhny was looking good to move up through the field and maybe get in the points. However, he suffered a set back when he overshot his pit and damaged his front wing on a wheel gun. Johnny continued on but was now down in 11th

Finished 11th

Italy

Qualifying

Johnny Herbert was facing his last ever European GP in Italy and it didn't start very qualifying down the field in 18th place.

Race

Johnny's race lasted only 2 bends as the back of Johnny's car was detroyed in the big crash at the 2nd chicane. Johnny stuggled back to the pits but the car was too badly damaged to continue.

Retired

Belgium

Qualifying

Johnny Herbert did a good job in qualifying at the Spa circuit. He was able to outqualify Eddie Irvine and take 9th spot on the grid.

Race

In the race Johnny failed to do anything spectacular but pushed on through the race and was able to bring the Jaguar home in 8th place, but it could have been better.

Finished 8th

Hungary

Qualifying

Johnny Herbert had his usual disappointing qualifying session in his Jaguar. He qualified down the grid in 17th place

Race

Johnny's race wasn't much better. He made a good start but was suffering technical problems in his Jaguar that caused him to spin a number of times. The Jaguar finally decided to call it a day and Johnny was retiring from yet another race.

Retired

Germany

Qualifying

Well Johnny's weekend started well for a change. In the rain soaked qualifying session Johnny was able to make a run at the right time and managed to get himself onto 8th spot on the grid. It looked like things were finally gonna change round for Johnny.

Race

Johnny made a reasonable start in the race but his run was going to come to end on lap 13 when he was forced to retire with gearbox problems. So more bad luck for Johnny. I guess he'll be hoping for a change of fortune when he goes to Champ Cars next year!!

Retired

Austria

Qualifying

Johnny Herbert was left as number one driver after Irvine retired through sickness. However, in qualifying he was unable to capitalise on Eddie's absence and could only manage 16th place in what seemed to be a badly handling Jaguar.

Race

Johnny had more luck during the race after he was able to avoid the road block caused by Michael Schumacher's spin and slot his way through the grid to move up to 6th place. Johnny must have thought he stood a good chance of getting some points but unfortunately it was not to be. Jenson Button was able to get past in the pit stops and this dropped Johnny down to 7th just outside the points.

Finished 7th

France

Qualifying

Well poor Johnny had another terrible weekend in France. He was outqualified by Eddie Irvine and was only able to take 11th place on the grid behind Jenson Button.

Race

Johnny's race didn't go very well. He had a reasonable start taking up station behind Jenson Button, but his race was to be short lived when he became one the first of the retirements with gearbox problems after only 16 laps.

Retired Gearbox problems

Canada

Qualifying

Johnny showed some good pace in qualifying but was still only able to qualify the Jaguar in 11th place, however he was higher than team mate Eddie Irvine who only managed 16th.

Race

Once again Johnny was Mr. Unlucky in Canada being the first retirement of the race after only 19 laps. Surely Johnny will have some better luck soon.

Retired

Monaco

Qualifying

Johnny Herbert showed good pace in qualifying narrowly failing to be ahead of Eddie Irvine on the grid. However, 11th place would be a difficult place to start to be in with a chance of points.

Race

Johnny Herbert made an excellent start and was able to get the jump on Eddie to take 10th at the start of the race. However, Eddie Irvine was able to get past when Johnny had some problems on his car and was forced to make an unscheduled pit stop. This dropped Johnny down the field and he was unable to make many places up. Had it not been for this stop Johnny would have been in the points for sure.

Finished 9th

European

Qualifying

Once again Johnny was unable to get to grips with Jaguar and qualified back down in 17th place.

Race

Johnny didn't make a great start either and was down in 18th place. However, he timed his stop for wets superbly and was able to make a number of places up at this stop. When things settled down after the 2nd stops Johnny found himself in an excellent 7th place. He was having a big battle with Jenson Button and Alex Wurz. Wurz was able to get past Jenson and tried it on with Johnny as well, but he ended up putting both cars out of the race with only 4 laps to go.

Classified 11th.

Spain

Qualifying

Well I don't know what's happened with Jaguar but they are proving very lacklustre at the moment. Johnny was only able to qualify in 15th place, and that can only be called 'disappointing'

Race

The race wasn't much better, Johnny going round in the midfield and then having to pit for fuel late in the race, which dropped him to a poor 13th place. Come Jaguar, give Johnny a decent car!

Finished 13th

Great Britain

Qualifying

Poor old Johnny came to Silverstone with rumours flying about that he was about to be ousted from the team. Some firm assurance was needed from Nick Resseler to confirm that Johnny would be staying for the season. However the car was again causing problems for Johnny and a qualifying position of 14th place was the best he could get.

Race

Johnny made a poor start to the British GP and was down the field to 17th. It was obvious that he was struggling with the handling of his car. A few places were made up through retirements, but Johnny shouldn't be battling at the rear of the field. He also suffered pit stop problems, but were less severe than Eddie Irvine, allowing Johnny some consellation in that he was able to beat his team mate home for take 12th place. Overall though, rather disappointing.

Finished 12th

San Marino

Qualifying

Johhny Herbert's race weekend didn't start off very well. He was struggling to get to grips with the Imola circuit and he only managed to put the car into 16th spot. He could really do with a better performance than that. Come on Johnny sort it out!

Race

The race itself wasn't that much better really either. He made places up through the field but this was mainly through other people retiring. However the car did get to the end and it was 10th spot. It appears Jaguar reliability is improving but Johnny needs some good results. Roll on Silverstone.

Finished 10th

Brazil

Qualifying

Well it was another bad weekend for our Johnny. The car wasn't handling to Johnny's needs and the disrupted qualifying session didn't allow Johnny to find a solution. When the rain washed out the rest of the session Johnny was only in 17th place and with lots to do.

Race

In race set up Johnny was in a lot better shape and was quickly getting through the field, getting up to 13th place just behind Jenson Button who was in 12th. However the car was once again going to let Johnny down and he retired on lap 51 with some kind of mechanical problem.

Retired lap 51.

Australia

Qualifying

Johnny Herbert had a disasterous start to his 2000 season. It seems bad luck has returned to our Johnny where mechanical problems with his Jaguar meant he was only able to qualify in 20th spot. His team-mate Eddie Irvine was able to secure an impressive 7th spot on the grid.

Race

Well what can I say poor Johnny had another bout of bad luck in Melbourne on race day. His race lasted all of one lap. Pedro Diniz was pushed wide and ended up touching Johnny, but he was able to continue from this only to have his clutch go on him just a few corners later.

Retired Lap 1, clutch problem
