Eddie Irvine in 2001

Japan

Qualifying

Japan provided the usual qualifying performance from Eddie with the team failing to set any times alight and finishing in the mid-field in 13th position.

Race

The race was more interesting for the team. Eddie made a great start and had moved up from 13th to 7th by the time of his first pit stop. However, it would be the pit stops that would be the team's downfall. The fuel rig failed when Eddie came in and consequently no fuel made it into the car. Eddie was waved out and had to come in again on the next lap. Amazingly the same problem occured with the fuel rig. Eddie had no option but to retire the car. It was a disappointing end to a disappointing season for Jaguar.

USA

Qualifying

Jaguar have decided to stop development on the R1 car for the remainder of the season. The car has struggled to get up on pace with the top teams and another lacklustre qualifying session was expected in USA. Eddie Irivine found himself in 14th spot after the qualifying session and will have to hope for another good start and good reliabilty to make up places in the field.

Race

Eddie Irvine had one of the most interesting races at the US GP. He was always going to struggle with 14th place on the grid, but the team opted for an amazing pit stop strategy. They fueled the Jaguar to the brim and sent him off at the start with a very heavy car. He dropped back through the field and was down in 18th position at one point. He kept out when everyone else was pitting and was making more and more places up. Indeed he was able to stay out until nearly 3/4 of the race had been completed. A good stop saw him come out in 5th and he was able to stay there till the end. He was later pomoted to 4th when Trulli was disqualified.

Finished 4th

Italy

Qualifying

Eddie Irvine was struggling to get a good set up on his car in Monza and he found himself losing time to his team mate Pedro de la Rosa. He eventually finished the session in 13th spot, three places behind Rosa.

Race

Both Jaguar's made excellent starts at Monza, and Eddie Irvine found himself in 7th place. However, from here he would start going backwards. He was suffering from a mysterious power loss problem and he quickly dropped back through the field down the 18th. The team decided that there was a big problem with the car and they decided to pull Eddie in to the pits to retire.

Retired

Belgium

Qualifying

Eddie Irvine had a disappointing qualifying session. He was unable to get out on the right tyres at the right time and consequently he found himself down in 17th spot as the session finished.

Race

Eddie Irvine was involved in a terrible accident with Lucianco Burti at the 2nd restart. Burti came alongside Irvine to try and overtake, however, the two collided and Burti hit the barriers at an horrendous rate. Irvine who also hit the barriers was able to get out of his wrecked Jaguar and assist Burti. Fortunately Burti was able to escape serious injury, which is a testament to new safety regulations. However, Irvine's Belgium GP was over in the accident and he'll be glad to see that back of it.

Retired

Hungary

Qualifying

Qualifying was ultimately a bit disappointed for Jaguar once again. Eddie Irvine was outqualified by his team mate and was only 14th fastest. It was going to be a hard race for Jaguar to get in the points

Race

Eddie's race were turn out to be very short lived indeed. He got on the greasy side of the track and lost the back of his Jaguar going into turn 1. It was a driving mistake and Eddie should really do better than that!

Retired

Germany

Qualifying

Eddie Irvine qualified in 10th spot for the German GP, but he was slightly disappointed with his performance after he had set the fastest time in practice Friday.

Race

Eddie Irvine drove a brilliant race in Germany and was really pushing hard and fighting for some points. Unfortunately, his engine developed a misfire on lap 18 and he had to pit and call it a day. If he had managed to keep going it would have quite possible that Eddie could have got on the podium, but it wasn't meant to be.

Retired.

Great Britain

Qualifying

Eddie Irvine looked like he was about to hit some good form for the home fans. Despite being quick in the early practice sessions, Eddie had a really bad qualifying hour and he could only manage to 15th on the grid. Later Eddie said he session was 'disasterous'.

Race

With Eddie so far down the grid the chances of doing anything to get into the points were slim. However, after losing some places at the start he was able to start pushing despite a heavy fuel load. He eventually finished in 9th but he could have been a lot higher had qualifying gone better.

Finished 9th

France

Qualifying

Eddie Irvine had a successful session and eventually finished 12th spot on the grid. It would be a reasonable position to challenge for a points finish.

Race

Irvine made a good start and made places up on the grid. He had a big battle with Frentzen and was eventually able to get past the German when he made a mistake. Irvine drove consistently and was unlucky not to get in the points. It was however, a stirling drive.

Finished 7th

European

Qualifying

Eddie Irvine continued to show Pedro de la Rosa a thing or two and was able to get some good performance from his Jaguar. He eventually finished in 12th place and will be hoping for a points finish.

Race

Jaguar opted for a 1 stop strategy and looked to be handling the additional fuel extremely well. Eddie Irvine having a good battle with Frentzen in the early stages. Eddie kept pushing his Jaguar extremely hard. Unfortunately it was not enough to take 6th place but he finished just behind Mika Hakkinen in 7th place.

Finished 7th

Canada

Qualifying

Eddie Irvine fresh from his podium in Monaco was looking to qualify well for Jaguar in Canada. Despite good showings in the practice sessions Eddie was only able to qualify in 15th position.

Race

Eddie would have a lot to do in the race to make up places and it wasn't long before Eddie was having a go. Eddie tried a move on Nick Heidfeld on lap 2 but was over-stretching it and Eddie his the rear of the Sauber, spinning both drivers and putting them out.

Retired

Monaco

Qualifying

Jaguar came to Monaco with a new aerodynamic package and high hopes for the race. Eddie qualified brilliantly in 6th place and would be looking good for points in the race.

Race

Eddie had pretty much the perfect Monaco GP. He made a good start and was able to push the Jaguar to keep himself in the points. The car was reliable and through retirements from people ahead of him, Eddie found himself at the end of the race on podium. And what a place to claim the first podium for Jaguar. I'm sure Eddie was partying with the Monaco babes well into early hours Sunday night!

Finished 3rd

Austria

Qualifying

Eddie Irvine and Jaguar had their usual qualifying session with traffic affecting some of their runs, but Eddie's clear run towards the end of the session was good enough for 13th position, much as expected.

Race

Eddie Irvine made a brilliant start, the launch control obviously working well. However, he was overtaken several times and dropped back as the Michelins were not yet working. As the tyres came back Eddie was able to push again. He finished in 7th just outside the points, but it was a reasonable result for him.

Finished 7th

San Marino

Qualifying

Eddie Irvine set 2nd fastest time in Friday practice and hopes for a good grid position were high. However, come Saturday's qualifying the Jaguar just couldn't seem to get on the pace. Eddie managed 13th on the grid with the best of his runs.

Race

At the start of the race Eddie Irvine's Jaguar made the most of it's launch control and he was able to make up a few places. Eddie Irvine had a good pit stop strategy and was working his way through the field and looking good for a points finish. However, he was once again denied any glory when the Cosworth engine gave on lap shortly after his 2nd pit stop.

Retired

San Marino

Qualifying

Eddie Irvine found that finding a good qualifying setup was difficult due to the wet weather practice sessions allowing little time to set the car up for grooved tyres. Eddie Irvine eventually finished 13th on the grid but was hoping for a better position with the new Ford engine.

Race

The engine was to prove the achilies heel for the race. Eddie opted for a one-stop strategy which appeared to be paying dividends with Eddie moving up through the field and looking like a potential points finisher. However on lap 44 the Ford engine gave out and Eddie was forced to retire from the race.

Retired

Brazil

Qualifying

Despite showing some good promise the Jaguar was proving a bit of a handful to qualify. Once again Eddie found himself down the grid in 13th position.

Race

Eddie was optimistic for a points finish in Brazil. However, the race didn't start well for him whe he was given a stop-go penalty. This dropped him out of the running but a well timed pit stop during the wet conditions, jumped him back up the field. Eddie managed to climb as high as 6th but was suffering with tyre problems. Eddie lost the back end and spun, stalling the engine and putting him out of the race.

Retired

Malaysia

Qualifying

Jaguar were optimistic for a good position coming to Malaysia. However, Eddie once again had some power-steering problems and was also hampered by traffic in the all important qualifying session. He was 12th fastest but knew there was better in the car.

Race

The race wasn't to last long for Eddie. A coming together with Verstappen, caused Eddie to make an off track excursion, which was followed by a mistake on turn 6. Debris was collected in the sidepods and Eddie suffered a water leak which caused the Jaguar to retire after lap 4. It was another disappointing result for Eddie and the Jaguar team.

Australia

Qualifying

After the disasterous season for Jaguar during 2000, the team came to the first race of the season looking to be serious contenders. However, it soon became clear the the Jaguar was still some way off the pace of their rivals. Eddie Irvine qualified in 12th position but believed there was more speed in the car.

Race

Indeed more speed was found for the race. Eddie made a fantastic start despite having to start in the spare car at the last minute. However, a massive bottleneck caused by Montoya dropped Eddie down towards the back of the running order. However, Eddie drove brilliantly to get back up as far as 7th. A points finish was looking on the cards until a fuel problem required a late pitstop. Eddie dropped down but finished well in 11th.

Finished 11th
